DJ OLIVE

VINYL SCORES

EXHIBITION /
OCTOBER 19 TO NOVEMBER 24, 2012

DJ, musician, turntablist and visual artist with a degree from Purchase College (NY), Gregor Asch’s trajectory is singular, multidirectional and prolific. Based in Brooklyn since the late 1980s, his practice has been disseminated widely within both the music and visual art scenes (namely the Venice Biennale in 2003, and the Whitney Biennale in 2008). He has produced sound installations, albums, has deejayed and presented audio performances throughout the world, and has participated in musical projects in collaboration with a large number of artists, namely Ikue Mori of the group nowave, DNA, and Kim Gordon of the legendary band Sonic Youth, with whom he produced the experimental album SYR 5 in 2000. He is also cofounder of the labels The Agriculture, and Phonomena Audio Arts & Multiples.

Since 1995, DJ Olive has sporadically published new box sets of his audio object series Vinyl Scores. Each Score consists of a palette of sounds or compositional elements he produces in studio before pressing onto 12” vinyl. Distributed in the form of limited edition box sets, these Scores can be “interpreted by anyone with a few turntables and a mixer”, and should have a duration of approximately 11 minutes. Often presented as performances or simply recorded in studio, each edition of Vinyl Scores offers many different and unique interpretations, each produced from the same sounds. In response to the Montreal / Brooklyn event, Clark has invited DJ Olive to present a selection from some of his rarely heard recordings.
