This publication gives an account of the expositions, symposiums, and urban demonstrations organized around the project Monuments to the victims of liberty. In 2015, Entrepreneurs du commun proposed a counter-monument to the Monument to the victims of communism created by the Hommage à la liberté organization. It questioned the political and aesthetic paradoxes of that monument that was originally supposed to be built facing the Supreme Court of Canada: could “Canadian liberty” not have been used to justify crimes in the name of colonialism on Canadian soil and imperialism abroad? Does the demonization of communism obscure a renewed public thinking? Can we even commemorate such things with ephemerous or anti-monumental installations? To explore these internal contradictions, a call was issued for projects based on the format of a public art contest. Led by the Entrepreneurs du commun collective in partnership with AXENÉO7 and Galerie UQO, as well as with professors and students of UQO, Carleton University and the University of Ottawa, these activities took place in Gatineau and Ottawa. The project is co-created by Galerie UQO and AXENÉO7.
