MIXTAPES POUR ESPACES COMMUNS BY NICOLAS GRENIER

For this fourth edition of our fundraising exhibition Maison Modèle, Centre CLARK has invited Nicolas Grenier to come up with the concept. Interested in the passage of time that affects individuals as much as artworks, Grenier wanted to create a relationship between practices by artists at different stages of their artistic evolution, careers, and lives. For 2022, CLARK is proposing a multigenerational (model) home that will extend across myriad temporalities.

The term “common area,” when used in a domestic context, inevitably reminds us of the living rooms, kitchens, hallways, etc. that we have inhabited and shared. These are the spaces where people learn to adapt to one another, and where individual values, concerns, and ways of living meet, whether it be in the family home, a student residence, a shared apartment, a home with our life partner, or housing for seniors. Our notion of what cohabitation is, in familial, social, and political terms, is linked to our own spectrum of experiences—the color of the walls, the too-soft sofa, the unfortunate proximity between the bathroom and the kitchen, the beautiful morning light in the living room, the artwork that surrounds us.

With Mixtape pour espaces communs, we wanted to create an exhibition that embodies cohabitation through works that address ideas of space and time in a range of temporalities and dimensions. As a whole, we imagine these works as the visual soundtrack of a multigenerational home, like a metaphysical space where the past, present, and future can dialogue together, either through the variety of human realities from which they originate, through their artistic and symbolic scope, through their materiality and physical presence, or through the subjectivity of our external gaze that revives itself and reinterprets these works in ever-evolving ways.
