Marie-France Brière

In the 1980s, Marie-France Brière spent a long period of time in Pietrasanta (Italy), where she perfected her techniques for sculpting stone, a material that has remained an integral part of her practice throughout her career. For several years now, the artist has been developing her research into sculpture, reflecting on the various issues involved in integrating it into public spaces. Using a variety of treatments and arrangements, she creates structures that reorganize inside and outside, surface and lining, with a view to increasing the tensions of inert matter and concretizing forms based on the concepts of plasticity and resistance.

Marie-France Brière holds a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), and has received several grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) and the Canada Council for the Arts (CCA), as well as the Prix Louis-Comtois in 1996. A monograph offering an overview of her work was produced and published by Plein Sud Édition in 2022. The artist lives and works in Montreal.
