Santiago Tamayo Soler

Santiago Tamayo Soler is a multidisciplinary artist who was born in Bogotá (Colombia) and now resides in Montreal. He works primarily with video, and is informed by his background in performance art and film. He holds a B.A. in Studio Art from Concordia University (Montreal). He was the 2024 artist-in-residence at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA), as part of the Empreintes residency. Santiago has been awarded the EDAA 2023 Emerging Digital Artists Award presented by EQ Bank and Trinity Square Video in 2022. In 2024 he became a laureate of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (MNBAQ) Contemporary Art Award.

Santiago Tamayo Soler’s practice focuses on world-building. The artist proposes digitally constructed universes that blend with sampled archival elements, such as video, photography, and online-found images. These virtual environments propose examining Latin American identity from a diasporic lens. His explorations often mimic the visual language of recognizable formats, such as video games, telenovelas, and digital cartography.  He uses these formats as narrative devices to unfold stories that suggest a future imbued with radical fantasy.
