Artist
Amélie Laurence Fortin
Ny-Ålesund is Amélie Laurence Fortin’s first sound composition. It is based on five previous works — Envoy, Decade, 2RPM, Two Revolutions Per Minute and Cloud Nine —, recordings made on the island of Svalbard and Jan Mayen in 2017, as well as the use of modular synthesizers.
This sonic epic is a 20-minute 44-second journey that the artist nicknames sirens because of the choral presence of certain high frequencies. Ny-Ålesund is a visual work that takes us from one universe to another, immersing us in vibrations driven by opposing forces.
The artist would like to thank opera singer France Bellemare.
Ny-Ålesund was realized as part of a long-term residency at Avatar, audio and electronic art, and with further training funded by the Canada Council for the Arts.
