MARC-ANTOINE K. PHANEUF
Deux cent soixante-quatorze personnages

An artist’s book combining literature and graphic design, Deux cent soixante-quatorze personnages is a collection of everyday people. Built on minimal poetry—the pairing of a first name and a last name—this chaotic inventory brings together improbable figures, whether invented or real, encountered by the author or drawn from popular culture. Each page unfolds a setup and a punchline, generating wordplay and sonic echoes, a vivid encounter between heterogeneous cultural elements.

Modest in size yet imposing in presence, Deux cent soixante-quatorze personnages is a singular object: a rare book in its production, entirely gilded—pages, edges, cover, and spine. Through its deliberate materiality, the object invites handling, leafing through, and keeping, like the most solemn of breviaries. The design and graphic layout were produced by Criterium, a graphic design studio based in Québec City and directed by Maxime Rheault.

Deux cent soixante-quatorze personnages was made possible thanks to the financial support of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, the City of Québec, and Culture Capitale-Nationale et Chaudière-Appalaches, as part of the Territorial Partnership Program of the City of Québec.
