Florence Viau

Anchored in a practice that is both sculptural and painterly, Florence Viau explores the ways in which images circulate, transform, and (de)materialize over time and across interfaces. Drawing on the fields of ecology, semiotics, and visual perception, she examines the recurrences and evolutions within our systems of representation, where matter is set free and information becomes revealed. Her formal and conceptual research is inspired as much by the making of images — the tools, techniques, and gestures that produce them — as by the supports that receive and alter them. Within this context, she interrogates the tensions between progress and decline through the use of science fiction as a speculative method. From this emerge works whose materiality is enveloped in a certain sense of enigma, and in which archaeological, technological, and cosmic references overlap.

Florence Viau (b. 1998) is a multidisciplinary image-based artist who lives and works in Tiohtià:ke / Montréal, where she is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Sculpture at Concordia University (2026), supported by the Dave McGary Memorial Award in Fine Arts and the Fonds de recherche du Québec. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Visual and Media Arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal (2021), along with an excellence scholarship from the McAbbie Foundation in Sculpture.

Her work has been presented in various exhibitions, including at the Musée du Bas-Saint-Laurent, the Musée d’art contemporain des Laurentides, Projet Casa, Le Livart, Artch, as well as in artist-run centres across Québec such as Centre Clark, Arprim, centre d’essai en art imprimé, Circa art actuel, Plein Sud, L’Écart, and the SAGAMIE Centre.
