Luis Manuel Otero Alcantara
Luis Manuel Otero Alcantara is a Cuban visual artist and activist. His performative work, focused on denouncing the Cuban regime and defending human rights, has made him a prominent figure in artivism in Cuba. He is currently imprisoned in a high-security facility for reasons related to his artistic practice and peaceful activism. Trained in spaces such as Tania Bruguera’s Arte de Conducta workshop and the Hannah Arendt Institute of Artivism, his work has been exhibited in Cuba, Europe, and the Americas. He has endured more than 60 arbitrary arrests and faces constant state repression. In recognition of his commitment, he has received several international honors, including the Rafto Prize for Human Rights in 2024, the Václav Havel Prize in 2025, and was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2021.
