Nicolas Arthur Dufour

Nicolas Arthur Dufour works with voice, text, and image. He loves fabricating new forms and recomposing what already exists: through quotation and the détournement of archival material, he seeks anchoring points that enable forms of emancipation. If he is interested in history – or rather histories – which he does not approach as a historian, but as a lover. He seeks to construct phantasmatic (in its original sense, referring to the nature of the phantom) lineages, binding him to figures, narratives, and images from the past. His projects take a critical stance on our collective imaginary and the myths that sustain it, for to inherit is to choose. And he chooses – in order not to lose hope –, to engage with shifting histories, whether past or speculative, reactivating their utopian breath.

Nicolas Arthur Dufour studied screenwriting as well as visual and media arts. He received the Monique-Charbonneau Scholarship (2021) as well as the recruitment scholarship from the Faculty Fund of the École des arts visuels at UQAM (2026) for his master’s degree. As part of this program, he will examine the hypothetical memory of municipal communism in the Mile End neighborhood.
