Nancy Tobin is a meditator, sound artist, and designer for the performing arts. Since 2000, her research in sound art has focused on non-traditional processes of musical creation. Her performances have been presented in several festivals and galleries, including MUTEK, AKOUSMA, OBORO, Fonderie Darling, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, MOIS MULTI, AVATAR (Quebec), NAISA (Toronto), and TONE DEAF (Kingston). She has received multiple grants from the Canada Council for the Arts (CAC) and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) for the development of research and creative projects.

Her sound art research focuses on non-traditional methods of creating music. Most often, these develop from self-generating sources such as feedback, electromagnetic waves, and beating tones. It is the unpredictable and random nature of these phenomena that inspires her to engage with and use them. When she plays with these elements—never knowing how they will react—she practices her attention and her ability to anchor herself in the present moment.
