Understory — Maddie McNeely in conversation with Camille Richard

The forest is both a reserved and exploited territory. It offers shelter and resources while bearing traces of extraction and loss. Our built environments reproduce these same tensions: they offer rest, yet are shaped by logics of ownership, profit, and control. How can we exist within a system where protection itself can wound and deepen our vulnerability? — Camille Richard

Camille Richard is an author and independent researcher living and working along the St. Lawrence River, between Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang/Montreal and Wolastokuk/Saint-Roch-des-Aulnaies. Her research focuses on conceptual and contextual artistic, curatorial, and institutional practices that redefine the parameters of exhibition-making and develop alternative methodologies of production and knowledge transmission. Holding a master’s degree in art history from the Université du Québec à Montréal, her curatorial practice takes multiple forms, including exhibitions, publications, and reflective workshops. Among her most recent projects are Ces vibrations qui nous traversent at DRAC (2025), Champ Liminal at Espace Parenthèses (2022), Fragments at the Musée d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul (2022), and Nos corps ont leurs raisons qu’il nous faut comprendre at Galerie de l’UdeM (2021). Camille has also taken part in residencies and presented her research at DARE-DARE (2023) and La Chambre Blanche (2021). In 2025, she received the Hnatyshyn Foundation – Fogo Island Arts Young Curator Residency Grant. She regularly contributes to specialized art journals such as Vie des arts, Esse, and Espace art actuel. Since 2021, Camille has devoted much of her energy to the general and artistic direction of Est-Nord-Est, where she reflects on ways to make institutional structures more caring and inclusive.

INT. EXHIBITION ROOM — SUNSET
You enter a room and are guided by a series of bricks—one of them glistening, a vivid saffron hue—arranged to form a path suggesting two directions. You can turn back toward what is familiar, or move forward. What you observe in the space are mostly still objects, marked by traces of recent movement. Do you feel distracted? — Emily Zuberec
