Through their adventures at home and on the road, Jennifer Cadero and Pierre Gauvin created thirteen photographic polyptychs. These images challenge many assumptions, particularly those concerning sexuality and sensuality. Both humorous and serious, the photographs explore everyday possibilities: the role of religion in contemporary life, romantic relationships, and the daydreams of domestic existence. By inverting standard, erotic clichés, these photographs reconsider the boundaries of submission and dominance, restriction and freedom; desire, pleasure, tenderness, abandonment, beauty, and kitsch. Finally, these images were seized and deemed “pornographic” by Canadian customs authorities in November 1995. After fighting this censorship, Cadero and Gauvin recovered their negatives and their works—a success that made this exhibition possible.
