In this era, characterized by the relativization of our foundations, our reference points and our models, one observes in different areas of study – among them the hard sciences, the arts and ethics – a consistent trend towards defining methods and describing practices, rather than seeking to establish their limits and precise criteria.

Fullum-Holt Fileur Entreprise, a fictional company created by Hugo Brodeur positions itself squarely in this tendency. The visitor entering Room 1 of the gallery is invited to move through different sections of Fullum-Holt Fileur – storerooms and showrooms, spaces for development and growth, and finally the division of conception and research – traveling up the production chain of small irregularly shaped objects which are the result of spinning, as is suggested by the company’s name.

While referring to classification methods, as well as recent technological development and its repercussions – fabulous and threatening – on the future of the planet and the species living on it, the apparatus put together by Brodeur becomes a metaphor for the creative process here. Freely marrying the attributes of a research laboratory and an artist’s studio, Fullum-Holt Fileur Entreprise aims, in the words of its founder “to reactualize and poeticize this relation between the creative universes of the research scientist and the research artist.” After all, don’t the scientific gesture and the artistic gesture both have a marvelous propensity to transform our representations of the world?
