Jacques Marchand creates folded works that retain the qualities of ease and fluidity found in the drawings from which they are derived. These constructions—long, cursive lines or concentric forms, graphic patterns representing duration—are populated by parts of the human anatomy, objects related to it, and signs or symbols characteristic of sexual differentiation. These folded works, which serve as vessels for characters illustrating the sexual dimorphism of our species, explore the role and significance of a pair of XX chromosomes or a pair of XY chromosomes in shaping our individual destinies.
