Intrication I (détail) 1992

To perceive without seeing—isn’t that to catch a glimpse?

In the work presented here, there are essentially two gestures to note: cutting and tying. What prevails here, then, is the spirit of collage in an image-material that has become painting, affirming the image as the place from which the image originates. But there is more… What is at stake here concerns vision in the mode of that which eludes us, of that which withdraws.

(To make something visible is to place within the visible a space outside the realm of vision; it is to shift vision away from the seen place to make room for the “seer.”)

In the tangle of motifs where sometimes one disappears, sometimes another, the painting presents itself as a knot from which its multiple surfaces unfold.
