“My paintings of abandoned buildings and sites, set within isolated landscapes, draw on various sources—urban architecture and the art of the past. These sources are altered and transposed, thereby subordinating the subject to the vital tensions that lie beneath the surface of the painting. In my most recent works, I have sought an unsettling balance between the ‘real’ and the ‘imaginary,’ the known and the unknown, in order to convey the collective sense of uncertainty that accompanies our inevitable slide toward the end of this century.”
