This exhibition brings together six emerging artists around the theme of the “fluid landscape.” What does this theme entail? It refers to sculptures or installations created from built or salvaged furniture that has been transformed, altered, cut up, modified, and adorned with elements representing landscapes. These chameleon-like pieces of furniture, now transformed into sculptures, oscillate between “landscaped furniture” and “mobile landscapes.” This exhibition was conceived following an examination of contemporary art in Quebec. Over the past decade, several of the most prolific artists have presented installations that reconcile furniture with representations of landscapes. The structure of their work involves juxtaposing still-life elements with landscape elements. This exhibition is not, however, a retrospective of 1980s art. “Paysages meubles” brings together six artists whose work shares a thematic continuity with this “school of 1980s furniture.” The participating artists are B. B0urdeau, D. Buis, L. Darcel, P. Fournier, J. Macklem, and J. Marois. Bringing together landscape art and furniture means combining the private interiority of an armchair with the public exteriority of nature. It is a fusion of the intimate and the immense. It is also a way of demonstrating that the concept of nature is an extension of the cultural universe. Nature is a cognitive reconstruction; it is cultural.
