EXHIBTION FROM MAY 8 TO JUNE 14

In keeping with his project La Joconde, presented at L’Œil de poisson in 2011, Pascal Gingras considers painting and drawing through the intermediary of sculpture. With Anti-onto chachacha, the artist draws from a richly coded vocabulary in an attempt to blur the specificity of each medium. He creates sculptures, but by borrowing from the spontaneous gestures of drawing, and from the colour and material of painting. His objects are deployed within the gallery like drawings in space. Therefore, line is important, surfaces and scale relationships between elements are intertwined, and industrial materials bring his sculptures closer to the field of construction. Plaster and colour cling to steel structures, partially obscuring them beneath the added material. In his quest to create sculpture more spontaneously, the artist also uses polyurethane. This flexible, colourful, and spongy material is cast in several copies that allow him to create lines directly in the space. The resulting forms are consciously chosen by the artist for their potential to blur signification. A form may evoke references to objects or images, but the artist’s addition of other elements frustrates any fixed interpretation.

Pascal Gingras puts forward a formless aesthetic that questions the very nature of objects that attempt to free themselves from their materiality, but are in fact, only material. The tension in this sculptural ‘in-between’ of the material and the immaterial is the anchor-point of this work. Pascal Gingras seeks to create a perceptual impasse through different formal approaches in sculpture. Moreover, the artist uses optical effects that blur our perception of reality. An opening in one of the main gallery’s walls reveals a ghostly, almost holographic presence. Here, Gingras creates the illusion of depth. The artist suspends what is real and what is false. Reality becomes fragmented; our experience of the mechanism depends on the orientation of forms within the space, and is intimately linked to the viewer’s movement through the environment of this installation.
