The publication of Les deux soleils follows the exhibition of the same title produced at Langage Plus in Alma in 2021. The idea of putting into words a dystopian fable grew out of a reflection on the impact of global warming on our way of inhabiting the world.
In a kind of logbook, Lucie, little Simon’s mother, leaves a written record of their daily life on an arid, uninhabited land. She records events and acts as a guardian of time that has become uncertain: the building a yurt, the installing of a greenhouse, the celebration of a birthday. But the lack of water and the emptiness created by human absence weigh heavily on mother and son, especially since Simon has lost his father, who disappeared in the interstices of the earth. To give him some hope, Lucie introduces the boy to the world by communicating with the rhizomes of a mysterious mushroom.
In Les deux soleils, a mother’s conscious dreaming in the face of a succumbing nature becomes the raw material for a theater of the possible: Lucie’s task is to distort and metamorphose the imagery of a disaster, making it flamboyant in the eyes of her child. For this fable is indeed the story of persistence, of a will to live beyond reality; it’s a poetic interstice where the excessive light of the double sun opens onto the invisible, guiding humankind from a nightmare to the divine.
