MICHEL ARCHAMBAULT | SCULPTURES ET IMAGES

Michel Archambault’s recent work is based on the interaction between mediums, references and materials. The constantly renewed and never completed questionings are carried by the sensible dimension of the objects. As the artist underlines “it is about creating triggers, generating sensibilities, and escaping the rational.”

The sculptural elements around which the magazine images-touched up through drawing-revolve, testify to this practice which delves into the essence of heterogeneous combinations. Between the sleek form of an arcade game module with its graphic aesthetic, and the burned wood sculptures placed nearby there is an evident contrast, the limit of which points to a reinforced duality. In addition to this the play between empty and full volumes in the room’s adjacent area has the effect of densifying the space. The presence of 2D elements, certainly raises the heterogeneity of the sculptures, while also foregrounding the mix of cultural elements whereby the artist filters the images that refer to our collective identity.

The whole functions as a unit, but it operates according to a random mode. Running counter to a logical and calculated approach, this project reaffirms the dimension of chance so central to Michel Archambault’s work, a dimension that’s so much the more essential because it seeks to create singular, or even unexpected, reading relations. In the manner of a small museum, in which the most varied collections are gathered in a single room, the project “Sculptures et images” does not adhere to the notion of a finished installation or that of a coherent and ordered result.
