BOOKSTORE MANAGER AND COMMUNICATIONS ASSISTANT

Centre d’art et de diffusion CLARK is an artist-run centre dedicated to the production and dissemination of contemporary art. It encompasses several physical and virtual spaces with different functions. The two main components of the Centre are the gallery, which includes two exhibition rooms presenting over a dozen exhibitions and special projects each year, and Atelier CLARK, a woodworking studio that supports the artistic community. The Centre also includes a Poste Audio that presents five sound projects annually, the CLARK Bookstore, and a residency studio. CLARK also produces numerous off-site projects, including performances, and collaborates with a range of cultural and community partners.

 

MANDATE OF THE CLARK BOOKSTORE
Since 2012, Atelier CLARK has been dedicated to the dissemination of contemporary art publications. Its mandate is to provide visibility and a sales point for artists and publishers in order to promote their editorial work. The Atelier offers a curated selection of monographs, exhibition catalogues, zines, artist books, theoretical works, and specialized Quebec art magazines.

In the interest of promoting and valuing the editorial work of artists, authors, researchers, curators, artist-run centres, and cultural institutions, the Atelier operates under a competitive consignment model that ensures direct and advantageous compensation for artists and publishers. In addition to being a sales space, Atelier CLARK coordinates several publication launches and readings each year, and supports the production of editorial projects.

Under the supervision of the General Director, the Librairie CALRK Manager and Communications Assistant is responsible for the coordination, development, and outreach of Librairie CLARK, in addition to supporting the Centre’s communications management. They will also coordinate meetings of the Librairie Committee, which is made up of active artist members of the Centre CLARK who contribute to the development and vision of the Librairie.

The selected candidate will be invited to actively contribute to the development of Librairie CLARK’s activities following its strategic restructuring, in order to strengthen its presence within the Montreal and Quebec art scenes. The Librairie is currently undergoing significant development, and this position calls for a dynamic and passionate individual who wishes to help expand this part of the Centre’s activities through the coordination of launches, readings, and the development of collaborative projects including publications and more.

 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
BOOKSTORE

  • Monitor new publications relevant to the Librairie’s mandate (artist books, monographs, zines, specialized journals, etc.);
  • Establish and maintain relationships with artists, authors, and publishers;
  • Manage inventory, orders, and consignment contracts;
  • Oversee the Centre’s online store, including updates, inventory tracking, and order processing;
  • Coordinate the Librairie’s activities such as publication launches, reading events, and partnerships;
  • Oversee the display of publications in the Librairie space, including selections tied to current exhibitions, new arrivals, and works by CLARK members and partners;
  • Manage the Librairie’s social media (Instagram);
  • Participate in book fairs (Volume, Expozine, C’est Print!, and others), public activities, and cultural events related to the Librairie;
  • In collaboration with the General Director, prepare project budgets and ensure follow-up;
  • Produce an annual consignment report for artists, authors, and publishers, and manage payment follow-ups;
  • In collaboration with the General Director, plan and write grant applications related to Librairie projects.

 

COMMUNICATIONS SUPPORT
Provide support to the Communications Manager, notably for the following tasks:

  • Develop a communication and promotion strategy for the Centre’s activities;
  • Create and update content across the Centre’s platforms (website, newsletter [Mailchimp], Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn);
  • Produce communication tools using materials provided by coordinators of various Centre departments.
    *Depending on the candidate’s interest, this position may include taking over the Communications Manager role mid-term (4 to 6 months), with an increase in hours (24h/week instead of 16h/week).

 

REQUIRED PROFILE

  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience;
  • Experience in a bookstore, artist-run centre, cultural organization, or specialized publishing (asset);
  • Good knowledge of the specialized art publishing scene and close ties with artists and cultural/artistic organizations;
  • Knowledge of contemporary art in Quebec and of artist-run centres (asset);
  • Proven experience in event coordination and logistics;
  • Experience in communications management;
  • Excellent spoken and written French, good command of English;
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills;
  • Autonomy, flexibility, resourcefulness, and adaptability;
  • Strong ability to collaborate;
  • Writing skills and strong communication abilities;
  • Excellent time management and ability to prioritize;
  • Visionary and strategic thinking;
  • Computer skills, including knowledge of Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator;

 

CONDITIONS

  • Permanent part-time position;
  • Salary based on current pay scale ($22.13/h to $25.00/h), depending on skills and experience;
  • Flexible schedule: 16 to 20 hours per week (to be determined at time of signing), with on-site presence required Tuesdays or Wednesdays and Fridays. Evening and weekend availability required for events;
  • Start date: Tuesday, November 4, 2025;
  • Workplace: 5455 avenue de Gaspé, suite 114, Montreal;
  • Vacation: six weeks of vacation starting in the first year (July and winter holidays);
