Performances from Portugal & Slovakia (riap en circulation)

As part of RiAP 2016 en circulation, Le Centre CLARK and VIVA! art action will co-present performances by António Azenha, Alexandre A. R. Costa, Zuzana Žabková and Gabriela Zigova. These artists from Portugal and Slovakia will present their work during a performance evening on September 28.

The event will take place at 5455 de Gaspé, #104, 2 doors away from CLARK ! Free and open to everyone !

 

ARTISTS BIOS

António Azenha (Portugal)
António Azenha was born in Angola in 1964 and has a bachelor’s degree in art technologies from the University of Coimbra art school (EUAC). He is currently teaching at Infanta Maria high school (Coimbra), is the master of communication aesthetics at the University of Coimbra art school (EUAC), as well as president of the ARCA-EUAC association. Azenha was the artistic director of the Fimagem event held in Figueira da Foz in 1995 and has curated events such as Rota des Artes (2005, 2006, 2007) and Line Up Action, an international performance art festival (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013). He also worked as set designer for the Gil Vicente in Schools theater project organized by Coimbra Capital of Culture in 2003.

Alexandre A. R. Costa (Portugal)
Alexandre A. R. Costa was born in 1973 in Braga, but has been living in Porto, Portugal ever since. He is a University of Porto fines arts graduate with a major in sculpture and has also completed a master’s in arts in London. He is currently working on a PhD in art studies and contemporary art practice in Spain, with a scholarship from the FCT (a Portuguese foundation for science and technology). Since 2002, he has been a professor within the system of higher education (at the polytechnic and university levels), which gained him the title of “specialist” in fine arts and arts management in 2015. He has been working in video, photography, drawing, performance, installation and sculpture since the late 90s. He has exhibited his work in Portugal, France, Spain, the U.S.A. and Germany, as well as other countries. He has also been the curator of several exhibitions.

Zuzana Zabkova (Slovakia)
Zuzana Žabková was born in Slovakia and is based in Germany. She is an artist, dancer and choreographer who works in the fields of performance, video and installation. She was a recipient of the 2016 danceWEB scholarship from ImPulsTanz in Vienna, which had her training under the mentorship of Tino Sehgal. Also in 2016, she will be an artist in residence at the Triangle Arts Association in New York. In 2015, she was a recipient of the Salzburg Academy scholarship and of an ERSTE Stiftung fellowship in Austria, as well as an artist in residence at the MeetFactory in Prague, Czech Republic. She was an artist in residence in 2014 at Regular Line Santa Cruz in California and in 2013 at Art Quarter Budapest in Hungary. In 2012, she was an artist in residence at Halle 14 in Leipzig, Germany. She was the 2013 winner of the Vienna Insurance Group’s Essl Art Award for Slovakia and was shortlisted for the Young Visual Artists Awards program’s 2013 Oskar Cepan Award. She has an M.A. from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, Slovakia (2012) and a B.A. from the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava (2013). She is currently following an M.A. programme in choreography and performance at the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies in Giessen, Germany, studying under the mentorship of philosopher Bojana Kunst.

Gabriela Zigova (Slovakia)
Gabriela Zigova, born in 1989, graduated in 2015 from the Open Studio of Ilona Nemeth at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava (Slovakia). During her studies, she won two scholarships: to the Faculty of Arts at Brno University of Technology (Czech Republic) and to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (Austria). She currently works in a non-profit volunteer-run cinema in London (U.K.) as a programme assistant and events coordinator. She has participated in exhibitions in Bratislava, Prague and London. Since 2013, she has organized several curatorial projects. Her means of expression is mainly a combination of photography, performance and site-specific and interactive installation, and for the most part, the content includes the manipulation and confusion of the viewer’s senses.
