VIDEO ART @ HOME / 2020-2021
ABOUT VIDEO ART @ HOME: Over the next few weeks, CLARK will share videos that were originally presented as part of its previous programming. Whether you’re seeing them again or you missed them the first time, make the most of this collective isolation period by (re)discovering them in the comfort of your own home!
WEEK 1 / November 20, 2020
DAVID MARTINEAU LACHANCE
ODE TO SLEEPY HEARTS
(4 min – no dialogue)
With the second (or third!) wave of gallery closures, some of our exhibitions had to be shut down much earlier than we had planned. Fortunately, we’re able to bring David Martineau Lachance’s impressionist video directly to you. “Ode to Sleepy Hearts’ electroacoustic waltz is both a lullaby and an awakening. (…) A call for light during a particularly dark moment. An incantation to somnolent beings and alienated extraterrestrials.” * So go ahead – dim the lights, enter full-screen mode, and for four glorious minutes, let yourself drift away, just like you were here.

LUKE PAINTER
THE TEASERS AND THE TORMENTORS
(4 min 36 s – no dialogue)
For 2020’s last video that we are sending out, we decided to respond to our collective yearning to attend movies and theatre performances through Luke Painter’s exploration of the subject in The Teasers and the Tormentors. The work consists of a series of scenes in which the artist references the history of set design in cinema, theatre, and twentieth century magic shows. In it, we see various scenes “that quickly construct/deconstruct and transform themselves to create formal and narrative links between each art movement or historical period.* ” Can you identify these different sources of inspiration? Manon Tourigny mentions some of them in her text for Painter’s exhibition at CLARK in November 2016. See what else you can find!
